Surprise, surprise!

Hello there. I have got something new for you here. Okay, here is my little unknown fact: I like to receive surprises because I really enjoy the feeling of “unexpected happiness”. And I would like you to feel the same, too. That’s why I create this for you. Hope you like what I have prepared (and will prepare moving forward).

Life is changing so fast. Before you can finish the current task, the next ten have already lined up yelling for your attention. As much as you would like to stay updated with the latest technologies, scientific studies and interesting trends on how to bring your skin to the next level, you just couldn’t find the time (and, personally, I am simply dying to get away from the I-have-always-wanted-something-but-it-never-gets-done type of feelings”). That’s why I have created “Tracy’s Pick of the Week” to summarize highlights I have discovered from the last seven days, so that both you and your skin can enjoy some freshest air. Without further ado, below are eight interesting stories I would like to share with you.

1) Jamba Juice Offers One Million Free Smoothies

Alright, time sensitive stuff comes first. Jamba Juice has decided to distribute one million smoothies for free. Here is what you can do:

  1. Download the Isis Mobile Wallet (unfortunately, iPhone users are not able to enjoy the app yet. An iPhone user myself, I guess iPhone users will either wait or simply make our own at home for free smoothies).
  2. Visit your local Jamba Juice.
  3. Pay with Isis Mobile Wallet and chill!

2) Environmental Working Group (EWG) Releases Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen

I shared this via social media a few weeks ago and see the people have been constantly sharing or commenting on this post (as a side note, EWG provides effective and trending environment health research in the US). This is a message so important that I feel the need to bring it up for a second time. Remember you are what you eat. The quality of the food will influence your health status and eventually be reflected on your face.

3) Jay-Z and Beyonce Go Vegan for 22 Days (12/03 – 12/24)

On December 3, 2013, Jay-Z announced on his blog that he and Beyonce would go on a vegan diet for 22 days. Why 22 days to J&B? Below is a list of reasons:

  1. Jay-Z mentions: “There’s something spiritual to me about it being my 44th birthday.”
  2. The number four (4), to him, is a special number; and it happens that two plus two is four.
  3. Starting the vegan diet on December 3 means they will finish the challenges on Christmas day.
  4. Here I also chime in with my personal guess: I know that the number four (4) means a lot to Beyonce and bring her so much blessings and luck ; ) Could that be a reason, too?

4) 22 Days Nutrition Encourages You to Take on a 22-Day Eating Clean Challenge

Speaking of 22 Days Nutrition, here are more details: why 22 days for you? Well, since it takes 21 days on average to form a habit, you will “have found the way” on the 22nd day, according to 22 Day Nutrition team. Explore the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle; then challenge yourself to live with it for 22 days (if going 100% vegan is too hard for you, how about becoming a “part-time” vegan? This can mean becoming a vegan for 1-2 days in a week, perhaps?!). You can also follow their Instagram and use the hashtag “#22DaysVegan” to find your community and motivation. The team will announce winners on December 26.

5) Combining TCM and Western Medicines Shows New Hope for Cancer

It is interesting to see the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine is slowly finding its way to the global stage. Also interesting is that Chinese and Western medicines are forming allies to seek solutions to improve human body’s health and well-being. It is certain that there is still a long way to do with more hard work needed. However, the journey of a thousand miles should begin with the first step. And, it appears that Cardiff University’s School of Medicine and Peking University in China have become pioneers of this field. I am excited to see what will happen next.

6) Scientists Take Chinese Medicine to the West

Speaking of TCM going global, here is the coverage by CNN that Chi-Med’s labs in Shanghai, in partnership with Nestle, is working on an ambitious project of first breaking 1,300 medicinal herbs into their component parts and then attempting to test them for global use against disease. According to the news on Jun 12, 2013, the team had started the last round of testing trials for a botanical drug based on TCM before approval for sale. To me, this suggests the value of two-thousand-plus-year-old Traditional Chinese Medicine cannot be neglected. The fact that ancient Chinese were able to keep themselves healthy for millennia without any aid of advanced science amazes me. These days, I am digging deep into it to discover the path to optimal health and well-being and secrete behind a natural glow on our face!

7) Huffington Post Launches “Food for Thought”

In October this year, Huffington Post, in partnership with Chipotle, launched another section called “Food for Thought” to create awareness about “how food is grown, raised, and prepared and the effects this system has on us”. We will be able to learn more on GMO, food legislation, and tips for finding local food sources and picking seasonal produce. Feel free to play around that site. I have already subscribed to their news feeds and will keep an eye for you on the latest interesting news.

8) Meditation Sets Our Mind Free

In early November, I went on a meditation trip for 10 days which was an amazing experience. Immediately after I went back home, I came across this article. I would not be able to feel the meaning of this post, had I not gone through my 10-day meditation retreat earlier. And I would like to share with you my favorite part in the article:

“Ideas are like fish,” the filmmaker David Lynch wrote in “Catching the Big Fish,” a book on meditation and creativity. “If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They’re huge and abstract. And they’re very beautiful.”

Meditation can be amazing. It flexes our mental muscles and returns to us a stress-free state. As stress is likely to cause acne because it can stimulate our nerves to produce sebum, explained in The Clear Skin Diet, it is possible that meditation can offer a solution to lower the chances of breakouts.
